    While partaking in a debate on remakes for a leading news channel, the host posed a query to me: Do you think that a cult movie should be remade? Why restructure or revise the sacredness of a film that's so perfect? I instantly put forth my perspective and responded that if a brand is remade with a contemporary approach and in-the-running stars and if there is an enthusiastic audience to watch the cinema, I don't see any harm in recreating a famed work of genius. All I expect is the makers don't make a mishmash of the cult movie. It should come across more as an acknowledgment to the masterwork.

    But there's a flipside to what I mentioned above! The actors and film-makers involved in remaking a classic cannot escape minute and meticulous evaluation and comparisons because cineastes are going to walk in with predetermined conceptions. Remakes come with a certain baggage. Matching the standards and aesthetics of the original is the prime criteria.

    It's Hrithik Roshan's turn to wear the mask of the iconic character portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan two decades ago. Though not a money spinner then, AGNEEPATH did fetch Bachchan Sr. the National Award in the Best Actor category and is considered amongst the best films made that year [1990]. Twenty two years later, Vijay Dinanath Chauhan is brought alive by first-time director Karan Malhotra in Karan Johar's homage to the original film, which was produced by his father Yash Johar and directed by Mukul S. Anand. It's a colossal challenge for any actor/maker to pay tribute to a cult film, which continues to linger in our memory even after two decades.

    The premise is the same. Well, almost. So is the vital dialogue from the film which comes at a very crucial juncture in the present-day adaptation of AGNEEPATH: "Naam Vijay Chauhan, baap ka naam Dinanath Chauhan, gaon Mandwa."

    AGNEEPATH is an uncomplicated story of revenge, is hard-hitting yet entertaining, dwells on strong emotions and aggressive and forceful action, yet is dissimilar from the original. Debutant director Karan Malhotra sponges from the original, but bestows the new version with a fresh texture [screenplay adapted by Ila Bedi Datta and Karan Malhotra]. Krishnan Iyer M.A. [portrayed by Mithun Chakraborty in the original] is done away with, while Malhotra introduces another negative character called Rauf Lala [Rishi Kapoor] to make the proceedings more volatile and explosive. One can envisage the kind of burden the director has shouldered and despite the fact that viewers would be scrutinizing the goings-on with a magnifying glass and watching every frame minutely, you cannot refute the fact that Karan Malhotra has done a remarkable job as a storyteller.

     ‘Players’ is a razor-sharp flick with scintillating cinematography by Ravi Yadav that takes you through breathtaking locales of Amsterdam, Siberia and New Zealand, complete with James Bond style adrenaline rushing action sequences – high speed car chases, lot of aerial scenes, heist on the train and et all.
     Yet, despite all the gloss, the film lacks emotions. Abhishek appears to play ‘Dhoom’ inspector with corny dialogues and weak characterisation. Neil delivers a good performance. Omi Vaidya is frustrating sometimes with his ‘3 Idiots’ accent. Sonam and Bipasha look glamorous and Bobby is terribly wasted. In terms of background score, for the first time in Abbas Mustan film, the music appears weak.

I think one problem with the film is that it is about a grand passion, and mainstream Hindi cinema is not equipped to show a grand romance except in the most inane form. So while the young couple kiss each other with great gusto, they can't do much more. Ali's journey into the recesses of an artist's soul remains superficial, amplified only by its tokens -- a phiran in Kashmir, a group of gypsies in Prague, a Haryanvi haveli for Delhi's semi-urbanites. Planes, cars, motorcycles. Take whatever mode of transport you will, you come right back to the single fact: this is a film that lacks discipline. All the Rumi quotations of the world cannot provide either.

      The plot Three school buddies embark on a road trip through Spain, and find their lives change for ever. As Kabir (Abhay) gears up to marry his girlfriend of six months Natasha (Katrina), he coaxes and cajoles his friends Imraan (Farhan) and Arjun (Hrithik) to join him on an adventurous bachelor party/road trip. This is a journey they had planned to take four years ago, where each one is allowed one adventure of his choice, with the other two joining him, whether they want to or not! It's a trip that helps them iron out their differences, face their fears, alter their perceptions, explore the unexpected and it teaches them to live life to the fullest.

      Javed Akhtar’s magical poetries, impeccable performances by the cast, scenic and serene Spain, and a message, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara has all the ingredients that will hit the right chord with the audience.

      Zoya Akhtar’s film is about three friends; Kabir Dewan (Abhay Deol), who runs a family owned construction business and is just about to get married to his ladylove Natasha (Kalki Koechlin); Arjun (Hrithik Roshan), a financial broker who lives to earn big bucks and peacefully retire after the age of 40; and Imraan (Farhan Akhtar), an advertising copywriter, a playboy who is looking for his estranged father. They make a pact in college that they will go on an escapade before either of them ties the knot and would indulge in three adventure sports. Whatever one decides the other two have to abide by. And there on starts their exploratory road trip.

      It is a story about a bachelor holiday 3 youngsters took which will change the direction of their life journey. Arjun (Hrithik Roshan) is a financial trader, the future generation tension baby who doesn’t have a minute to pose and think about present. Imraan (Farhan Akhtar) is a copy writer for an advertising firm, at heart he wants to be a poet. Kabir (Abhay Deol) works in his father’s construction company and his mrriage is fixed with Natasha (Kalki Koechlin). The three friends plan a trip to Spain, to get some fresh air by breaking the patterns. Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara is all about how they will change their perspective about life, throwing away fear to make bold resolutions to move forward and live life in full.

      Zoya Akhtar's Spain odyssey demands just one thing from you: that you slip into adventure mode and then go with the flow.... Rest assured, you're in for a merry ride, with loads of thrills, emotional banter, romance and camaraderie between a host of characters who seem to be having as much fun as you.

      There seems to be one small little snag however. The first half of the film is low on drama and proceeds as a touristy piece on Spain. You do get somewhat restless watching the three friends check in and out of hotels, rent cars, play juvenile pranks and indulge in traditional adventure sports like deep sea diving and sky diving. Of course, there is a lot of friendly bantering too between the friends, as Farhan Akhtar and Hrithik Roshan battle ghosts from the past. And yes, a dash of romance as Katrina sashays into their life as the free-spirited waif with a wild side to her winsome self.

      "It all ends," says the poster slogan. A potentially grim statement of the obvious, of course, yet the Potter saga could hardly have ended on a better note. With one miraculous flourish of its wand, the franchise has restored the essential magic to the Potter legend – which had been starting to sag and drift in recent movies – zapping us all with a cracking final chapter, which looks far superior to CS Lewis's The Last Battle or JRR Tolkien's The Return of the King. It's dramatically satisfying, spectacular and terrifically exciting, easily justifying the decision to split the last book into two.

      Childhood ends, this time forever, with tears and howls, swirls of smoke, the shock of mortality and bittersweet smiles in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” the grave, deeply satisfying final movie in the series. A pop cultural happening extraordinaire, the Potter movies took uncertain flight in 2001 with Harry, then an orphan of 11, home alone with his grotesquely unloving relatives. Times were grim, at least off screen — the first opened in November of that year — but Chris Columbus’s directorial touch was insistently light as Harry was initiated into a world alive with odd doings, strange creatures and the evil that would almost consume it.

      Harry Potter's epic magical tale ends with a bang and a whimper (ours). The unlikely hero with the goofy glasses, nasty relatives and devoted friends has grown up. And he has grown up well, along with his cohorts at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Amazingly, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson and Rupert Grint, as Harry, Hermione and Ron, have remained plausible and captivating in their roles over the 10-plus years. Of course, they were bolstered by some of the best actors in Britain, who gave the series gravitas and humor.

   Positioning itself as the academic answer to Bad Santa, Jake Kasdan's Bad Teacher threatens a schoolyard tussle but refuses to hit below the belt. Screenwriters Gene Stupnitsky and Lee Eisenberg dish up shameless misbehavior but never approach the depravity of the earlier film -- probably a smart choice for the movie's box office prospects, which are solid, but one that places a certain tier of shock-hilarity out of reach.

   Waiting for “Bad Teacher” to begin, I caught a trailer for the upcoming “Horrible Bosses.” What is it with these titles? Studios may think that they can palm us off with flat, sour recitations of what their products contain, but, back in 1975, no one would have paid to see a Spielberg film called “Nasty Fish.” In the words of Raymond Chandler, whose ear for a good title was the sharpest of the twentieth century, the names of books and films should conjure “a particular magic which impresses itself on the memory.” “The Maltese Falcon,” as he said, “makes the mind ask questions.”

Chillar Party is a small film with a big heart where a kiddo gang shows more maturity than the adult species and a stray dog inspires you to be human.

The film opens with each child character being individually introduced through their traits, helping you familiarize with the Chillar Party from Chandar Nagar society. When Fatka enters the society as a domestic help with his mutt-mate Bhidu, after the initial friction, the boy and his dog become inseparable members of the kiddo gang.

Salman Khan, who is one of the co-producers of CHILLAR PARTY, was apparently never approached to produce it. He decided to turn producer only once he saw it. After watching the film, we now understand why.

Once in a while comes a film that is made with a lot of heart and touches you with its sheer innocence. And CHILLAR PARTY is one such film.

  What can you say abuot a movie like Buddha Hoga Tera Baap? Is it a movie that would have been so amazing to see about thirty years ago when this great action hero and the angry young man was kicking ass and taking pride in doing so in his prime? Well, the pride is back, the prime is back and so is Amitabh Bachchan. Back to what he does best – Action. Watching Buddha feels like watching nostalgia and sometimes its good, in fact, very good because a film like this isnt an escapist entertainment alone. Its a venue for personal expression.

  Apparently the Big B is “back” as the angry young, or rather, old man. Amitabh Bachchan’s next is his own home production – an AB Corp Film – directed by Puri Jagannath. The film’s trailers are playing heavily on Bachchan’s onscreen image from the 1970s and the film seems to be a continuation of that genre. The soundtrack is an intriguing specimen. Composed by Vishal-Shekhar, it has just five tracks, four of which are sung by Bachchan himself.

      On the whole, DELHI BELLY is a ground-breaking and inventive comic caper targeted at the youth brigade. People who can't absorb brazen, grimy and unabashed language might abhor it; in fact, it's not for the straitlaced moralists or purists. It's for those who have a strong belly, with an appetite for adult comedy and cuss words. Its wittiness may astound and astonish you. I viewed the Hinglish version, but I understand that the Hindi interpretation of the movie is so impactful that it renders you speechless. Eventually, DELHI BELLY works big time predominantly for the reason that it's a pioneering motion picture, an incredible film that dares to pierce into an untapped and brand new terrain. The unblemished, racy screenplay coupled with super performances and a chartbusting musical score will make it a WINNER all the way.

      Delhi Belly is a slick, madly crazy production that is mostly funny -- although the humour will more likely appeal to the 20-something and perhaps 30-something public school educated, English speaking, big city audience that the film targets through its previews, videos and playful songs. But I know for sure that my mother and just about everyone of her generation will be totally turned off watching Delhi Belly.The film has some really clever writing and is ably director by Abhinay Deo who seems to be having a blast making the film with his ensemble actors.

      "Delhi Belly," is a smartly paced, highly entertaining Bollywood gagfest. No comic masterpiece, but this perky pic nevertheless boasts likable characters, colorful villains, well-timed gags and Ram Sampath's extremely catchy tunes, all woven into a seamless, escalating whole.
